Our Home

We live in Eastern Kentucky, so far east we're almost in West Virginia. We are slap in the middle of coal country, miles from the West Virginia mining disasters and Butcher Holler, where Loretta Lynn was born and raised. Coal is King here and we're okay with that, it's my bread and butter.

Our home is situated on Old Horseford Road. That's a unique name, huh? We did not chose that name and have been told that it is a very old moniker for the mile and a half of gravel and dirt that leads to the main top of the hill where our house is. We have also been told that our house is situated on the highest point in the county which means that our house is the highest point in the county. From our yard we have a 360 degree view of mountain tops. In the winter its okay but during the spring and fall the view is absolutely gorgeous.

We began construction of our home only a couple of months before our son was diagnosed with cancer. I tell people that the only reason we're still married is because we were so concerned with taking care of our baby that we had little concern for decisions regarding the house. Things were much smoother in that regard than they would have been had our priorities been different. Trust me, we would have fought about things.

We live on a ridge (the top of a hill or mountain. In this case it's a hill. A hill is much smaller in size than a mountain, for those of you who don't know the difference. We have hills where I live. Just travel a little farther south or east and you'll find mountains.) with a small handful of neighbors. Everyone living there is new, the space was uninhabited prior to us.

It is quiet and serene and a lovely place to relax. I have my own little private corner of the porch where I can sit and read, my passion, while the kids play in the yard and the hubby does whatever it is he does when he disappears for large periods of time. The only, absolutely only, problem with the location is, you cannot keep a car clean.
